NYU (18-5, 7-5 UAA) trailed 59-46 after Brandon Woodhead hit a layup for Chicago (14-9, 7-5 UAA) with 2:56 remaining.
Juniors Chael Clark (free throw), Matt Basford (layup) and Michael DeCorso (three-pointer) brought the deficit down to seven with 52 seconds left.
However, the Maroons still led by seven, 62-55, with just 29 seconds left.
Still, the Violets were not quite done.
Senior Jared Kildare hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left to make the score 62-58.
After a Chicago turnover and missed free throw, Basford missed on a three-point attempt with 3.2 seconds, but was fouled by Jason Vismantas.
Basford connected on the first two attempts, but purposely missed the third. After a scramble for the loose rebound, Kildare finally grabbed the ball and got off a three-point attempt from the left corner which bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Kildare finished with a game-high 16 points. He also recorded nine assists for a total of 170 this season, the highest one-season total in team history.
Also scoring in double figures for NYU were DeCorso (14), sophomore Michael Magee (11), and Basford (10).
The Violets were playing without their leading scorer (15.9) and rebounder (9.3), junior Jason Boone, who was forced to sit out with an injury.
Jason Hicks and Jesse Meyer each had 13 points for Chicago.
