Despite the loss, Mount Ida seniors Scott Chamberlain (Millis, Mass./Millis) and Matt McGaughran (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) reached milestones in the game. Chamberlain scored 20 points to become the top scorer in program history, while McGaughran netted 15 points to join the exclusive 1,000 career point club. Chamberlain, who now has 1,420 career points, surpassed Joshua Didick (1,412 points) on the school’s all-time list. McGaughran (1,011) joined six other Mustangs who have amassed 1,000 or more career points.
Maine Farmington led by nine points (31-22) following a Magnusson layup with 5:39 remaining in the opening frame. The Mustangs battled back to take the lead at the half though, as they used an 18-9 run to build a 40-37 lead.
The Beavers exploded for the first 16 points of the second frame and never looked back. Mount Ida cut the deficit to only three points (75-72) with less than a minute left in regulation, but Maine Farmington drilled six straight free-throws to ice the game in the waning seconds.
Sophomore Matt St. John (Wayne, Maine/Maranacook) drained six treys en route to a game-high 27 points for the hosts. The Beavers also received solid production from classmate Sean Fry (Jay, Maine/Jay), who collected a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards to go along with four helpers. Senior Travis Carrier (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds for Maine Farmington.
Chamberlain grabbed ten rebounds to complete his 25th career double-double and 5th of this year, while McGaughran added eight rebounds and four assists. Junior Doug Williams (Ellicot City, Md./St. Mary’s) delivered 20 points and five boards, and classmate Andreas Vasiliu (Newton, Mass./Newton North) rounded things out with 11 points, four helpers and a pair of steals for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida (6-18, 4-9 NAC) finishes out its 2006 campaign with a league game at Thomas College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Maine Farmington (11-13, 6-7 NAC) finishes off its regular season with a tilt versus NAC foe Lasell College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
