Greensboro 88, Christopher Newport 82

Greensboro, N.C. — Steve Berg scored 31 points and made a school record 8 three-pointers to lead Greensboro College to an 88-82 win over Christopher Newport on Friday.

GC’s victory, combined with a Methodist win and N.C. Wesleyan loss, puts The Pride into a three-way tie for third place in the USA South conference standings. In addition, GC ends an eight game winning streak for the Captains.

The biggest difference in the game came from beyond the arc, where GC connected on 10-of-21 shots (47.6%) opposed to the Captains who managed only a 5-of-15 (33.3%) performance.

Leading 47-42 at the half, The Pride pushed the lead to six point advantage just over six minutes into the second half, following a three-pointer by Berg. Over the next six minutes of a back-and-forth game, which resulted in one tie, a series which included three-pointers by Berg and Adam Hill gave GC a 72-63 lead.

The Captains cut the GC lead to just one basket, 76-74 with 3:30 remaining after four straight points by Jahmar Claxton, however George Greene answered for The Pride, and CNU would get no closer than the final six points over the final 1:36 of the contest.

Michael McDuffie had 13 points and George Greene tallied 14 for The Pride. Theo Tamini had a game high 12 rebounds.

For CNU, Donta Selden led four Captains in double figures with 16 points.

GC record 11-12, 6-5; Streak W2; Up next vs. SU, 2/18, 4 p.m.
