O’Boyle was 8-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point range, as he scored 19 or more points for the third consecutive game.
After WU scored the first bucket of the game, Brandeis scored 11 consecutive points to jump out to the 11-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game. With Brandeis leading 18-11, freshman Sean Wallis checked in the Bears’ lineup and made an instant impact. Wallis scored six points to lead WU on a 15-3 run as the Bears took a 26-21 lead with 3:41 remaining.
Seniors Scott Stone and Mike Grunst had eight points apiece in the first half. The Bears shot 41.9% (13-31) from the field in the first half, and forced 13 turnovers.
O’Boyle and Wallis came off the bench with 15 minutes left in the game with WU leading 42-39 and made another instant impact. In less than a minute, Wallis had two steals and two assists resulting in eight points for O’Boyle as the Bears built a 50-39 lead. O’Boyle added another three-pointer and a lay-up as the Bears took its largest lead at 57-40 with 10:45 remaining.
Steve DeLuca and Kevin Olson got the Judges back into the game as they scored all 13 points to trim the lead to 59-50 with 7:08 left. Stone hit his 200th career three-pointer to give the Bears a commanding 64-50 lead. He becomes just the second player in school history to record 200 or more three-pointers. Brandeis cut the lead to 70-64, but would get no closer as the Bears posted its 28th-straight win over the Judges.
Washington U. shot 60.9% (14-23) in the second half, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Bears also hit 13-of-17 shots from the free-throw line in the second half.
Stone had 17 points and five assists in the win, wile Sophomore Troy Ruths added 12 points and eight rebounds as he scored in double digits for the 28th-consecutive game. The victory marked career win number 425 for head coach Mark Edwards, who is now 425-222 (.657) in his 25 seasons on the Hilltop Campus.
Steve DeLuca led Brandeis (12-11, 5-7 UAA) with 26 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Olson added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Judges.
Washington University (16-7, 8-4 UAA) returns to action Sun., Feb. 19 at New York University. Tip-off is set for Noon (EST) at the Coles Sports Center in New York City.
