York (Pa.) 94, Gallaudet 75

YORK, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team made the final regular season game in the history of Charles Wolf Gym a memorable one as the green and white posted a Capital Athletic Conference-clinching 94-75 win over Gallaudet University on Wednesday night. The win gives the Spartans their second straight regular-season CAC crown and home court advantage throughout the CAC tournament starting next Tuesday. The green and white have now won nine straight overall and 30 straight at Wolf Gym. That streak is the longest active home court streak in Division III men’s basketball. York now stands at 22-2, tying last year’s overall record, and 11-2 in the league. Gallaudet falls to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

The Spartans came out strong, feeding off an emotional pregame Senior Day ceremony, as they led 18-8 a little over six minutes into the game. The Spartans built the lead to 13 before the Bison picked up a pair of buckets to cut the lead to nine at 25-16. That would be the last time the Spartan lead was under double figures the rest of the night. The green and white responded with a 9-2 run that increased the lead to 34-18 with 6:53 left in the stanza. Gallaudet cut the lead to 12 with two free throws and a jumper but York quickly used a back -to-back threes from senior Brandon Bushey to push the lead back to 18. Those triples were the beginning of a 15-2 run that ended the half, giving the green and white a 49-24 lead at the break.

The second half saw Gallaudet use a 10-5 run over the opening three minutes, cutting the York led to 20. The Bison kept the heat on the Spartans, cutting the lead to 17 at 58-41 just under five minutes into the half. The Spartans pushed the lead back to 32 at 78-46 with 9:25 remaining in the game. The Bison then hit the green and white with an impressive 22-4 run that cut the York lead to 82-68 with 4:20 left in the game. York increased the lead back to 21 on a Brad Zerfing triple with 1:46 remaining. The Spartans then substituted and finished off the conference-clinching win.

The Spartans were led by the tandem of Bushey and sophomore Chad McGowan as they each poured in 20 points. Bushey added a team-high eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a steal. Bushey was 8-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from three. McGowan was equally as efficient from the field as he was 7-for-9 from the floor including 1-for-2 from distance. The sophomore was 5-for-10 at the charity stripe while he also contributed four rebounds and a blocked shot. Zerfing played well for York as he contributed 11 points, six assists, and three rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Freshman Quinn Howard continues to be a spark off the bench for York as he tallied 11 points, four assists, and three steals in 16 minutes of play. Freshman Nate Fry added nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a blocked shot for YCP.

Gallaudet received a double-double from Frank Jackson as he tallied a game-high 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Robert Haney added 15 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 23 minutes before fouling out late in the game. Jon Mowl was the third Bison in double figures with 14 points but the standout freshman struggled from the field as he was 4-for-11 overall including 3-for-10 from three.

The Spartans shot a blistering 72% (18-for-25) in the first half and finished the game converting a season-best 63.6% (35-for-55) from the floor. The Spartans also sizzled from downtown as they made 10-of-19 from distance, a conversion rate of 52.6%. Gallaudet finished the game shooting 38.5% including a 45.5% mark in the second half, a half in which they outscored York 51-45. The Bison handled York on the boards 36-35 as it is just the fourth time this year the Spartans were out-rebounded in a game and the Bison have done it to York twice.

York held a 46-34 edge in points in the paint and the green and white bench outscored the visitors’ reserves 50-18.

The Spartans conclude the regular season on Saturday as they travel to Mary Washington to face the Eagles. The Spartans have lost four straight in Fredericksburg with their last win coming on January 12, 2002. Tip time is set for 4:00 pm on Saturday.
