Carthage 72, North Park 68

CHICAGO — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (9-14, 5-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) came back from an 19-point second-half deficit to beat North Park University (4-20, 2-11 CCIW), 72-68, on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the North Park Gym in Chicago. North Park led by nine points at halftime, 36-27, after leading by as many as 11 in the first half. The Vikings, using an 14-4 run to start the second half, bumped their lead to 19 points, 50-31, at 15:06. The Red Men responded with a 14-3 run of their own to cut the lead to eight, 53-45, at 10:43. North Park still led by seven points, 64-57, at 4:22 before Carthage closed out the game with a 15-4 spurt to win by four, 72-68. The game was tied at 68-68 with 51 seconds remaining when Kyle Jeffery connected on layup to give the Redmen their first lead of the game, 70-68. A pair of free throws by Scott Hood with 10 seconds to play iced the win. Carthage shot 41 percent (28-68), while the Vikings shot 49 percent (27-55). Trey Bowens led the Red Men with 19 points. Scott Hood had 15 points and five assists, Keena Johnson 11 points, and Billy Jacklin added 10 points and seven rebounds. North Park’s Brett Mathisen led all scorers with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Jay Alexander had 20 points and 10 boards. Carthage closes out its home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 18 by playing host to Millikin University (10-14, 3-10 CCIW) at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. (7:30 p.m.).
