Maryville (Mo.) 77, Blackburn 55

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — It was a bitter sweet night for Maryville men’s basketball as the Saints recorded a huge victory over the SLIAC’s top ranked Blackburn College, but at the same time bid farewell to six members of the men’s basketball team. Maryville put everything they had into tonight’s 77-55 victory which improved them to 9-3 in the SLIAC and puts them in a three-way tie for first in conference play with Blackburn and Webster.

It was evident from the tip-off that Maryville was not going to give Blackburn an easy game. After the two teams’ last face-off, the Saints were defeated 66-72, but were out for revenge this time. The Saints gained an early 6-0 lead and never slowed down from there going into half time up 40-27 and out rebounding their opponents 28-10.

Seniors Ben Hebl and Matt Regan led Maryville in scoring just as they have for the last nine contests. Hebl ended with 15 points going 6-for-11 from the field. He also added three boards, three assists, and two steals. Regan totaled 11 points in the contest while pulling down eight rebounds and tallying three steals.

Also helping out on the boards were seniors Stephen Bash and Ryan Klein who pulled down nine and seven rebounds respectively and added nine points a piece. Klein also dished out three assists and recorded two huge blocks for the Saints. Fellow seniors Tim Elwell and Jared Smiddy added six and five points respectively in the win and combined for six rebounds.

From the bench, Matt McCarthy played some quality minutes scoring 10 points for Maryville and grabbing five rebounds. Mike Turpen was also back to his shooting ways hitting three huge three-pointers in the team’s victory.

Blackburn was led by Zak Allan who tallied a game-high 17 points for the Beavers. Allan also had five rebounds and three steals in the loss. Teammate Luka Djedovic added 14 points and five rebounds while Zeb Hammond contributed 13 points and two assists.

Maryville will return to action this Saturday when they take on MacMurray College at the Highlander’s home court. The game is scheduled for a 1 pm start.
