Heidelberg 88, John Carroll 80

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Oh — A key 12-0 run by Heidelberg within the final five minutes of tonight’s contest provided enough cushion for the visitors to storm to a come-from-behind 88-80 victory over the John Carroll Blue Streaks in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest played at the DeCarlo varsity Center.

John Carroll took 69-67 lead with 4:32 left to play in the second half on a Justin Ragor three-pointer. Heidelberg would answer emphatically with a 12-0 run, keyed by six points and an assist by Chad Szalay. While the Student Princes converted six of seven possessions during that stretch, JCU fumbled the lead away with five missed shots and two turnovers.

Ragor snapped the run with yet another three-pointer – the last of his career-high six – to make the score 79-72, but it would be too late. The closest the Blue Streaks would get would be five points behind with five seconds left.

Eight players for Heidelberg scored in the first half to boost the Student Princes to a 44-37 lead at halftime. Leading the way for Heidelberg were Greg Tyson and Shawn Shriver, who both combined for 20 points in the first half.

John Carroll would chase Heidelberg to start the second period, and would take its first lead since the 12:11 mark of the first half when Ragor buried a three-pointer to make the score 57-55 at the 12:11 mark of the second half. There would be four lead changes and three ties over the next nine minutes before Heidelberg embarked on its game-deciding run.

Heidelberg (9-15, 5-12 OAC), which snapped a ten game losing streak at the hands of John Carroll, had four of its five starters score in double figures, led by Tyson, who poured in 21 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. Szalay had 16 points, and was also joined in double figures by Brian Smidt (14) and Shriver (13). The Student Princes shot 30-55 (.545) from the field for the game.

John Carroll (12-12, 8-9 OAC), which has now dropped five consecutive games for the first time since the 1991-92 season, was paced by a game-high 22 points from Ragor, who finished the night 6-10 from beyond the arc. Chris Day added 16 points for the Blue Streaks.
