The junior guard was 12-for-18 from the field, including 8-of-11 from three-point range to tie his own school record for most three-point field goals in a game.
The Gophers (2-20, 2-11 Capital Athletic Conference) also picked up 30 points from another source, senior guard Jonathan Garritt. It's the seventh time in 2005-06 that Russo and Garritt combined to score at least 50 points in a game for Goucher.
The Gophers led by as many as 11 points in the first half only to have the Seahawks (8-15, 3-10 Capital Athletic Conference) go on a late 10-3 run to get to within 40-36 at the break.
Russo was a perfect 5-of-5 on three-pointers in the second half, nailing two of them in the opening three minutes of the period to help the Gophers regain a double-digit lead at 48-38. His final three-point basket of the contest came with 9:40 left to play and put Goucher ahead by 19 points, 72-53.
The Seahawks closed to within five points twice during the final minute of play, the first time on a three-pointer by Tyson Lesesne and then on a three-pointer by Valdez Preston. Preston was the leading scorer for St. Mary's with 22 points and Lesesne followed with 21.
The Seahawks have lost six games in a row since defeating Goucher, 87-80, back on Jan. 25.
The first Goucher player to score 38 points in a game was David Clark, who did it against Mary Washington on Feb. 15, 1992, meaning he held the record by himself for exactly 14 years until it was tied tonight by Russo.
