EUREKA, Ill. — The Rockford College men’s basketball team defeated Eureka College Wednesday night in a 71-65 result. While the Inferno fans were just as active tonight, it only seemed to help Eureka’s Red Devils until the half tonight. The Red Devils started the game off with a 6-point run before the Regents replied with 5 of their own. The Red Devils held the lead for the majority of the first half with the Regents tying the score twice and taking the lead once. The Regents had a couple of big blocks in the first half, but the most remarkable thing in the first half was Dupree Powell’s (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson) four 3-point field goals in 5 attempts during the first half to keep the Regents in pace with the Red Devils. Powell led all scorers in the first half with 12 points. The Regents ended the half down 29-33.
At the beginning of the second half, the Regents tied the game up twice before taking the lead for the rest of the half on a lay-up by Jacob Dunkel (South Beloit, Ill./South Beloit) with 16:42 on the clock as part of an 11-point run by the Rockford. Maurice Smith (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) led all scorers with 20 points and 8 rebounds by the end of the game, going 9 for 11 from the charity stripe. AJ Richard (Gibson City, Ill.) led the Red Devils with an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double. Other Regents’ scorers in double digits were Lane Good (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman) with 14 points, Dupree Powell with 12 points, and Jacob Dunkel with 11 points. The Regents remain in third place in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference and will play Clarke College, currently ranked first in the conference, on Saturday.
