Allegheny 81, Hiram 72

MEADVILLE, Pa. — In a foul-marred game that was unable to get any momentum, the Allegheny Gators did not trail, moving into sixth place in the NCAC with an 81-72 victory over the Terriers of Hiram College on Wednesday night.

Four" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/torsney1.jpg">Four Gators reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Ben Torsney’s (Morgantown, W. Va.) (right) 18 points.

Allegheny (11-12, 7-8 NCAC), now a game below .500 on the year, scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed for the game, as Hiram (3-21, 1-14 NCAC) was held without a shot for the first two minutes of the contest. The first half lead grew to as many as 14 with 5:14 to play in the period, and was at a dozen points a minute and a half later before the Terriers used a 13-2 to tie the game at 41 before Bill Babe (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) hit one of his game-high five three-pointers with 22 seconds left, sending the Gators into the locker room with a three-point lead.

After" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/savage5.jpg">After cutting the deficit to one coming out of the second half, the Gators then pushed ahead with a pair of 7-0 runs to take the lead to 11, seven minutes into the final period. The Terriers closed to within two late in the game, but were unable to get over the hump in the nine-point Allegheny win.

Babe scored 17 points for the Gators, while Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Casey McCloskey (Erie/Cathedral Prep) each scored a dozen. Matt Majzlik (Monaca/Hopewell) and Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg/Knoch) each just missed double figures in the scoring column with nine and eight, respectively. Savage pulled down a game- and career-high 12 rebounds, while McCloskey dished out seven assists. Savage added five assists, while Babe and Majzlik nabbed a trio of steals.

Hiram was led by Rick Baldwin’s 19 points, while A.J. White and T.C. Spencer added 17 and 13, each. Spencer, White and Chuck Williams pulled down seven rebounds to lead the team, while Brandon Pool dished out a team-best five assists.

The Gators hit the road on Saturday, February 18 and travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on the fourth ranked Tigers of Wittenberg University with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
