The win clinched a 10-8 ODAC mark for Guilford (12-13) and the fourth seed in this weekend's ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament in Salem, VA. The Quakers and fifth-seeded Emory & Henry meet Saturday in the 3:00 p.m. quarterfinal game at the Civic Center. Guilford and Emory & Henry had matching 10-8 ODAC records, but the Quakers earned the higher seed by winning both regular-season meetings with the Wasps.
Guilford led for most of the game, but could not put the Generals (4-19, 4-15 ODAC) away. Snipes' traditional three-point play with 2:22 remaining gave the hosts a 74-67 edge, but Washington and Lee's John Mumper (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) answered with a three-pointer and following a Guilford miss, added two free throws to make it a 74-72 game with 1:24 remaining.
Freshman Femi Kusimo's (Charleston, WV/Charleston Catholic) layup in the post tied the game at 74 with 15 seconds left after the Generals' Ryan Owens (Floral Park, NY/Chaminade) corralled an offensive rebound and fed Kusimo for the tying hoop.
After a Guilford timeout with nine seconds left, Snipes' drove to the basket and drew Washington and Lee freshman Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, MN/Holy Angels) second foul. Snipes made the first free throw, but missed the second. Goodman grabbed the rebound and raced through traffic downcourt, but could not get a shot or pass away before time expired.
Snipes scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half, including Guilford's final six points. Sophomore Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) added 11 points and nine rebounds. Snipes and Strong, both regular starters, came off the bench as Guilford started seniors L.T. Lockett (Fairburn, GA/Sandy Creek (Middle Tennessee State)), Ryan Kitaif (Ormond Beach, FL/Seabreeze (Methodist)), Robby Poteat (Hickory, NC/Hickory) and Jamel Taylor (Palm Bay, FL/Brevard Christian) in the final home appearances of their careers. Taylor grabbed seven boards and scored all of his nine points in the first half, which helped Guilford to a 37-29 halftime lead.
Goodman led the Generals with 17 points and had six rebounds and four steals. Mumper finished with 16 points, 12 in the second half, and five boards. Kusimo scored 14 points and led Washington and Lee with nine rebounds off the bench. Washington and Lee shot 52.9 percent from the floor and committed only four turnovers in the second half.
