Cazenovia 82, Bard 77

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. — The Cazenovia College Wildcats men’s and women’s basketball teams completed a season sweep of their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival, the Bard College Raptors, winning back-to-back games in their Tues., Feb. 14 double-header.

Cazenovia led off with an easy 74-55 win over the Raptors as the women’s squad pulled away from Bard with a strong second half. Cazenovia improves to 7-16 with the win and 6-8 in NEAC play. Bard falls to 5-17 with the loss and 1-13 in conference play.

Leading from the 19:09 mark of the game, Cazenovia played mistake-free basketball. Committing a season-low 11 turnovers (three in the first half and eight in the second stanza), the Wildcats forced Bard into making 26 errors that Cazenovia converted for 25 points. Every participating Bard student-athlete committed at least one turnover in the game.

Cazenovia’s Ashley Lewis (’07, Whitesboro / Whitesboro HS) finished with a game-high 18 points. Lewis was 7-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity-stripe. Lewis also finished with a game-high five assists.

Bard’s Amy Engleson finished with a game-high 22 points and tied Cazenovia’s Kate Lincoln (’08, Waterloo / Waterloo HS) with a game-high 7 assists. Elyse Rivas finished with a game-high nine rebounds for the Raptors. Rosemary Winter finished the game with five blocks for the Raptors. A season-high for individual blocks against the Wildcats, Winter was the largest contributor to a combined season-high 14 blocks by both squads.

The Cazenovia men’s team recorded its second thrilling victory in as many games. Beating Bard 82-77 in overtime, the Wildcats are now 2-0 in games that go into the extra stanza. The Wildcats move to 8-16 on the season and 7-8 in the NEAC with the win. Bard falls to 3-21 on the season and 1-14 in conference play.

Coming down to the wire, the Wildcats trailed by nine points, 54-63, with only 4:32 left on the clock. Freshmen shooter Steven Harris (’09, Watervliet / Watervliet HS) promptly hit a three on a pass from fellow freshman Erik Sauer (’09, Pennellville / Phoenix HS) to begin the Wildcats’ comeback. Going on a 9-2 run over the next two minutes, Cazenovia pulled even with Bard on a Harris duce on a Sedric Hawkins assist.

Knotted at 67-67 in the final 32 seconds, Cazenovia’s Steven Zavackis (’07, Carthage / Carthage HS) came up with a crucial block on a potential game-winning lay-up from Bard’s Collin Orcut to send the game into overtime.

In OT, the Wildcats and Raptors exchanged leads three times over the first minute of the extra session. The Wildcats would pull ahead when Hawkins, who finished with a career-high five steals, picked the pocket of Bard’s Adam Turner and helped Harris get to the line for two free-throws that brought the score to 73-70.

Bard would pull ahead only momentarily on a Demitrius Washington three-pointer that made the score 76-77, with 59 seconds remaining, before the Wildcats’ Joshua Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS) hit a clutch three-pointer seconds later and went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe to seal the win. Winans scored 6 of his team-high 21 points in the final 43 seconds of play.

Zavackis finished with a double-double for Cazenovia. Finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Zavackis also recorded three blocks and three assists.

Bard’s Josef Woldense scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to record a double-double in the loss. Woldense had a game-high four blocks.

The Cazenovia starters played the majority of the minutes in the game. Winans and Zavackis played the entire 45 minute game. Bench players accounted for just 20 of the 225 minutes for the Wildcats.

The Cazenovia squads play their final regular-season game of the year on Sat., Feb. 18. Traveling to Keystone College to face the Giants, the women are slated to play at 1:00 PM and the men are scheduled to play at approximately 3:00 PM.
