Emory took an 87-80 lead when freshman Greg Lockett scored in transition with 2:00 left in regulation. The Bears, though, ended the period on an 8-1 run to force overtime. Senior Scott Stone hit a pull-up to start the run, and freshman Tyler Nading added two free throws. Stone converted a pair of foul shots, as did freshman Sean Wallis to seal the rally.
Sophomore Danny O’Boyle gave the Bears a five-point lead in overtime after hitting a three-pointer from the left corner and adding two free throws. Emory, which connected on 25-of-30 free throws in the game, rallied with a 7-0 run, highlighted by senior Jeff Hall’s five straight points. WU tied the game again at 95-95 when Wallis drove the baseline and found junior Jonathan Breshears down low for a lay-up.
In the second overtime, Stone gave WU a brief 97-95 lead, but Hall responded with a three-point field goal from the left wing to give EU a one-point edge (98-97). WU trailed 100-99 with 35.6 seconds left, when Breshears missed two foul shots. Hall grabbed the rebound and took two dribbles when Nading picked his pocket and drove in for the go-ahead lay-up with 28 seconds remaining in double overtime. Stone, who finished with 19 points, added a free throw to round out the scoring.
WU built an 18-point lead (56-38) at the 12:51 mark of the second half after four straight free throws by Wallis. Emory rallied back with a 9-2 run, as Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos netted all nine points.
Sophomore Troy Ruths ended the run with a short turnaround jumper in the post. Ferderigos responded with a long trey from the right wing to draw WU within 10 points (60-50). Nading and O’Boyle knocked down five free throws to give WU a 65-50 lead, but Ferderigos scored on a drive and a triple from the left wing to make it 65-55.
Wallis hit two more free throws for the Red and Green, but Ferderigos, who scored 23 consecutive Emory points, struck again. He converted a three-point play and knocked down another three-pointer to make it 67-61, when WU called for time with 6:54 left. The Eagles (9-13, 2-9 UAA) tied the game at 69-69 and took the lead when Ferderigos, who finished with 45 points and nine rebounds, hit two free throws. He scored 34 points in the second half and connected on 14-of-24 field goals for the game.
The Bears held the Eagles to 0-for-7 shooting to start the game and took an 8-2 lead. After EU rallied to tie the score at 8-8, WU reeled off eight unanswered points. O’Boyle hit two straight three-pointers, and Stone stole a pass and took the ball length of the floor for an uncontested lay-up. That basket gave the Red and Green a 16-8 lead, forcing Emory to call timeout with 10:37 left in the half.
Washington U. led 42-31 at halftime. Nading paced the Bears with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field in the frame. Senior Mike Grunst added nine points, including 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Ferderigos registered 11 points to lead EU, while junior Eric Barvin added seven points and seven rebounds.
Ruths and Grunst finished with 13 points apiece before fouling out in regulation. O’Boyle added 19 points. WU surpassed the 100-point plateau for the second-consecutive game—the only such occurrence in the program’s 91-year history.
Washington U. returns to action Friday, Feb. 17 at Brandeis University. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. (ET) in Waltham, Mass.
