Worcester State 82, Massachusetts College 46

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team got a much needed victory over the visiting Trailblazers of MCLA Saturday afternoon by the final score of, 82-46, in Lancer Gymnasium. The win gets the Lancers back over .500 with a mark of 12-11 (6-4 MASCAC). MCLA falls to 2-20 (0-9 MASCAC).

The Lancer victory combined with Fitchburg State’s loss to Westfield State this afternoon puts the Lancers in a strong position to qualify for the MASCAC postseason tournament.

Worcester State grabbed a 12 point half time lead as they shot 43.4 percent from the floor but also took care of business at the free throw line hitting 13 of 16 from the charity stripe. The Lancers were led by senior guard Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) who scored 14 points in the session. Sophomore Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) added 10 points for the Lancers in the half. MCLA was led by Adam Garner (N. Adams, MA) who had 9 points in the half. Guard JP Quintal (Queensbury, NY) added 7 points for the Trailblazers.

In the second half, it was all Worcester State as MCLA could manage just 6 field goals in the second half. Every Lancer scored as five members reached double digits in scoring. Hopkins finished with a game-high 16 points followed by Spont with 15. Junior Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT) posted his second double-double in the past three games as he scored 15 points and grabbed 16 boards. Freshmen Tyler Hopkins (Oxford, MA) and Randy Gratton (Ware, MA) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

MCLA was led by Garner with 14 points and Quintal who finished the game with 11 points.

Worcester State will return to MASCAC action on Tuesday when they travel to Bridgewater State College. MCLA will host the Salem State College Vikings.
