Colby-Sawyer 85, Wentworth 69

BOSTON, Mass. — Senior forward Andrew St. Clair (Pittsfield, Maine) shot 12-for-19 from the floor, en route to scoring a game-high 26 points to go along with nine rebounds and two assists as the Colby-Sawyer men’s basketball team won its eighth game in its last nine attempts with an 85-69 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game played at Tansey Gym.

In a first half that saw the lead change hands nine times, the Chargers would lead by as much as six (12-6) 5:43 into the game on a three-pointer by junior guard Pat Kenny (Wethersfield, Conn.). However, the Leopards would use a 9-2 run over the next 3:03 to take a one-point (15-14) lead. During the run, senior forward Frankie Hall (Boston, Mass.) scored six points, including the basket to give Wentworth the lead. After Kenny hit a layup, senior forward James Thorpe buried a three, and St. Clair nailed a jumper, the Chargers increased their lead back to six. However, Wentworth would not back down, going on a 13-3 run and taking its largest lead of the half, 28-24, when junior forward Bryan Gaine (Braintree, Mass.) hit two free throws with 6:33 left.

Unfortunately for the Leopards, that would be the last lead they would know, as Colby-Sawyer would outscore Wentworth 21-9 to close the half and take a 45-37 halftime lead. During the half-ending run, St. Clair had eight points, while Thorpe chipped in with five. Both teams shot well over the first 20:00, with the Chargers shooting 54.8 percent and Leopards 54.2 percent.

Top open the second half, Wentworth would trim the lead to six on a layup by sophomore guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.), but that would be as close as the Leopards would get, as the Chargers scored the next nine points to bring the lead to 15. Despite one last 8-1 spurt to bring the lead down to eight, Colby-Sawyer put the game away by scoring the next seven points.

Kenny chipped in with 14 points for the Chargers, while senior guard Collin Bray (Brookline, Mass.) netted 11 and had seven assists. Thorpe would finish the game with 11 points and three steals. Over the final 20:00, the Chargers, who improve to 12-9 overall and 10-3 in CCC play, shot 56.7 percent, while holding their hosts to 38.7 percent shooting.

For the Leopards, Prezzie-Blue scored 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting and had five assists. Freshman guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) scored 12 points and dished out four assists, while Gaine and Hall scored 10 points apiece.
