The Wolverines took their only lead of the second half when Bobby Turner bucketed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining, 64-63. After working the ball upcourt, Wilson drove the lane where he was fouled by Grove City. In a silent gymnasium, Wilson connected on both attempts, giving Waynesburg a one-point lead. A last-ditch Wolverine shot fell innocently, as the Yellow Jackets swept the season series for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
After finishing the first half with two points, Wilson scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half. In the final frame, the three-year starter became the 29th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He is the first Yellow Jacket player to accomplish the feat since guard Mike King (2000-2004).
Waynesburg stretched its second-half lead to nine points with 6:36 left on a Wilson three-pointer. Grove City trimmed the lead to two points, 55-53, on a jumper by Mark Smith with 4:49 remaining before Chuck Cotherman made it a one-point contest, 59-58.
After the teams continued to exchange points, Turner gave the Wolverines the lead before Wilson clinched the victory.
Forwards Jeff Nero and Josh Parisi scored in double figures for the Yellow Jackets. Nero bucketed a game-high 17 points, while Parisi collected a game-high seven rebounds.
Despite the close score, the teams shot vastly different from the floor. The Wolverines shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the floor, while WC shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54).
Yellow Jacket forward Ryan Bujnowski posted six points and five boards on Senior Night.
Waynesburg travels to New Wilmington, Pa. next Saturday, Feb. 18, to close out regular season play against the Westminster College Titans. Earlier this season, Waynesburg defeated Westminster 117-87, as six Yellow Jackets scored in double figures.
