Washington and Lee University led by two before going on a 17-0 run to pull away for the 91-68 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday night in Lexington, Va.
W&L (4-18, 4-13 ODAC) led by 11 at the half 46-35 before EMU got back in the game in the second half. The Generals held a two-point lead at 63-61 with 8:29 to go when they made their move. They held the Royals scoreless for over four minutes to go ahead 80-61 with 4:18 to go. Altogether, W&L outscored EMU 28-7 in the final 8:29 of the game.
Chris Halkitis led four Generals in double-figures with 22 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Isaiah Goodman had 15 points, five assists, and two steals while John Mumper also had 15 points and four assists. Alex White added 12 points, three boards, four assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Senior forward E.J. Arrington (Staunton, Va.) led the Royals with 16 points, four assists, and two steals. He advanced two spots on the EMU career scoring chart to 12th with 1,224 points. He passed Larry Sheets ('82) and Calvin Williams ('73), who each had 1,217. Arrington also moved up into 12th on the career assists chart with 208. He passed Roland Pollard ('81) and his current assistant coach Carey Keyes ('98), who each had 205.
Junior center Jason Lentz (Diana, W.Va.) had 12 points, four rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Sophomore guard Korey Whiting (Stafford, Va.) also had 12 points with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. EMU played without leading scorer Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.), who sat out with a thumb injury.
W&L shot 58.9% for the game, including 7-for-13 (53.8%) on three-point field goals. The Generals were also 18-for-22 (81.8%) on free throws and led in rebounds 27-22. EMU also shot well, shooting 52.2% from the floor, but was done in by 24 turnovers. The Royals were 2-for-7 (28.6%) on three-pointers and 18-for-28 (64.3%) at the free throw line.
EMU will close the regular season on Tuesday at Virginia Wesleyan College at 7 p.m. The Royals are currently tied for seventh place in the ODAC and will likely need to beat the first-place Marlins in order to avoid facing VWC in the ODAC quarterfinals.
