Hobart 84, Vassar 65

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Vassar College men's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in an 84-65 loss to Liberty League rival Hobart College Saturday afternoon in the Athletic Center.

The Statesmen (11-11, 7-5) began the game with a 12-0 run and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Sophomore forward John Grazioli (Melville, NY/St.
Anthony's) scored six of Hobart's first 12 points in the opening minutes and finished with a game-high 18 points. The Statesmen led by as many as 17 in the first half and with the victory remained in contention for one of the four spots in the Liberty League's Conference Tournament later this month.

Leading 40-27 at the intermission, Hobart began the second half by outscoring the Brewers 14-2 in the first six minutes to build its lead to 54-29 with 14:20 remaining.

Junior forward Mike Mastro (Westbury, NY/Jericho) added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Statesmen who swept the season series from Vassar. Senior forward Tim Apuzzo (Cumberland, NY/Greely) came off the bench to score 12 points in 12 minutes for Hobart.

Vassar, who is now 11-10 overall and 3-8 in the Liberty League, was led by sophomore guard Tyson Brazell (Salt Lake City, NY/Waterford School) who had 17 points, two assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Lawrence Avitabile (Southington, CT/Southington) was also in double figures and finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Vassar will host Liberty League rival Rensselaer on Tuesday (Feb. 14) at 8:00 p.m.
