Mary Hardin-Baylor 60, Texas Lutheran 43

SEGUIN, Tx.; — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team shut down the Texas Lutheran offense and the Crusaders put enough points on the board to make it pay off in a 60-43 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in Seguin. The UMHB men improve to 15-8 overall and 14-6 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The win, coupled with Sul Ross State’s loss to Hardin-Simmons also clinches and ASC Championship Tournament berth for the Crusaders. The loss drops Texas Lutheran to 7-15 overall and 6-14 in the ASC.
UMHB held the Bulldogs to 35 per cent shooting from the field and 21 per cent shooting from three-point range in the first-half. The Crusaders built a 31-24 halftime lead and trailed just twice in the first half. UMHB then scored the first six points of the second half and never led by less than 11 points the rest of the way. TLU shot just 28 per cent from the field in the second half and went just 1-9 from three-point range. UMHB also out rebounded the Bulldogs 39-34 and shot 42 per cent from the field while hitting 6-11 from beyond the arc.
Tim Lytle came off the bench to hit 3-5 from three-point range and lead UMHB with 11 points. Chris Poole had nine points off the bench for the Cru and Ryan Burgart added eight points. Jerrod Carpenter had a game-high 14 points to lead Texas Lutheran but no other player scored more than six points for the Bulldogs.
The UMHB men will now return home to close out the regular season with a pair of ASC West Division home games next week. The Crusaders will host Hardin-Simmons University for a 7:30 PM tip-off on Thursday before welcoming McMurry University to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 3:00 PM start on Saturday.
