Salisbury 95, Mary Washington 88

SALISBURY, Md. — The Salisbury men’s basketball team defeated the University of Mary Washington Saturday night, 95-88, in double overtime. Rico Stewart hit a lay-up with 2 seconds left at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and Segun Odumeru banked in a three-pointer with six-seconds left in the first overtime to put the game into a second overtime.

Odumeru led all scorers with a 32 point performance, shooting 12-21 from the floor. Stewart added a double-double for the Gulls recording 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jon Pierce tallied his own double-double for the visiting Eagles with 25 points and 10 boards.

The Sea Gulls came out of the gate firing, opening up as large as a 14 point lead halfway through the first half at 22-8, but they cooled off through the second 10-minutes, scoring only 12 more points on way to a 34-26 lead at the break. The second half opened with UMW firing on all cylinders, with a Mike Lee (25 points, 5 assists) three-pointer and consecutive lay-ups by Pierce to pull within one of the Gulls.

The Eagles took their first lead of the game with just under seven-minutes to play in the second half and opened up as much as a six-point lead on SU. With Salisbury down three and three-seconds left on the clock, Ray Williams (12 points, 5 rebounds) went to the charity stripe to shoot two. After making the first, he purposely missed the second to give SU a chance at the tie. Ozi Menakaya (8 points, 7 rebounds) grabbed the rebound, missed his shot, but Stewart was there for the put-back to send the game into an extra session.

In overtime, Odumeru hit a fall away, three-point bucket with six seconds to go in the game to put the game into another overtime. The second OT was dominated by the Gulls who never looked back after Odumeru hit a three-pointer to open up the scoring. Salisbury ran away in double OT on way to their seven-point victory.

As a team, Salisbury shot for over 50% from the field and out rebounded UMW 51-43. With the win, Salisbury improves to 13-10 (7-5 CAC) and the Eagles dropped to 13-9 (8-4 CAC).
