Mount Holyoke 58, MIT 44

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — Junior Angela Astuccio (Foxboro, MA) led the Lyons to their eighth NEWMAC victory, scoring a game-high 14 points in a 58-44 decision. Mount Holyoke improves to 17-4 (8-3 NEWMAC) with the win, and gains sole possession of second place in the league. MIT drops to 7-14 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Twenty-five seconds into the first half, Michal Ruchelsman (West Orange, NJ) netted a three-pointer, giving MIT their first and only lead of the game, 3-2. MHC rattled off the next 16 points over a 12 minute period, jumping out to a commanding 15-point lead. The Lyons remained in control for the rest of the half, limiting the Engineers to only 16 points.

In the second period, the Lyons gained their largest lead of the game, 19 points, at the 16:48 mark. However, the Engineers whittled down their deficit to10 points with under three minutes to go off a three-pointer from first-year Alice Yeh (Bellevue, WA). MHC’s Christine Godin (Fitchburg, MA) followed up with a jumper and Astuccio netted all four of her free throw attempts to give the Lyons their final regular-season home victory.

Three additional Mount Holyoke scorers reached double digits for the game: Joneé Billy (New York, NY) and Joeanna Silvey (Boston, MA) knocked down 12 points apiece, while Godin finished with 11 points. Billy tallied her fifth double-double of the season, picking up a game-high 10 rebounds. As a team, the Lyons shot 36% from the floor, forced 19 MIT turnovers, and scored 12 points on second chance opportunities.

Alice Yeh paced MIT with 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from downtown. Junior Christa Margossian (Revere, MA) notched a team-high nine boards. While the Engineers shot a chilly 28% from field goal-range, they were hot from beyond the arc, knocking down nine of their 15 opportunities for a 60% 3-point average.
