Sophomore guard Tom Cuddihy (Scituate, MA) scored a season-high 28 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 6 assists to lead BSC to the win. Junior forward Tyler Lang (Franklin, MA) posted a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Lang also added 4 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals. Junior center Derek Thompson (Hyannis, MA) scored 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting while also recording 7 boards, 7 assists and 3 steals. Thompson connected on 5 of 5 free throw attempts as well.
The Bears allowed the first three points of the game but then when on a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead in the opening minutes. Bridgewater State would never trail after that as the Bears took a 41-32 advantage into the half. Up 56-42 with 15:39 remaining in the second half, BSC put the game away with a 19-4 run which upped the lead to 29 points (65-46).
The Bears shot 51% (21-for-41) in the second half including 7 of 11 (64%) from three-point range. BSC also connected on all nine free throw attempts in the final stanza after converting just 8 of 16 foul shots in the first half. Bridgewater also dominated the boards outrebounding Mitchell by a margin of 52 to 32 with a 21-6 edge on the offensive glass.
Junior guard Adam Rose (Harwich, MA) and senior forward Cliff Furtado (Dartmouth, MA) came off the bench to finish in double figures for the Bears as well. Rose scored 15 points (12 in the second half) on 5 of 7 shooting, while Furtado chipped in with 12.
Junior guard T.J. Smith (Wallkill, NY) put on an impressive shooting display for the Pequots as he poured in a game-high 32 points on 12 of 18 shooting. Smith, who had 19 points by halftime, connected on 5 of 8 three-point attempts and was 3 for 4 from the foul line.
Prior to the game, the Bears honored all the 1,000 point scorers in BSC men’s basketball history. The event was put together through the coordinated efforts of the BSC Athletics Department, Head Coach Joe Farroba and the men’s basketball team, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the Crimson Ambassadors, a student alumni group. 17 out of the 22 all-time 1,000 point scorers were in attendance including Hall of Famers John McSharry (1971-75), Joe O’Connor (1990-93), Bruce Higgins (1993-97) and Mark Gonsalves (1995-99). Gonsalves is the Bears’ all-time leading scorer with 1,907 points.
Bridgewater State (13-8) is back in action on Tuesday night (“Senior Night”) when the Bears host Worcester State College in a key MASCAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 PM. Mitchell College (7-16) returns to the hardwood on Tuesday night at 7 o’clock as the Pequots travel to Clark University.
