The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the 15:57 mark. Sophomore Troy Ruths started with a short jumper in the post, and senior Mike Grunst followed with back-to-back lay-ups. Senior Scott Stone connected on a pull-up 18-footer, and freshman Tyler Nading capped the run with a lay-up.
WU, which led 51-38 at halftime, shot .576 (19-of-33) in the opening half, including 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Danny O’Boyle led the Red and Green with 14 points in the first half, hitting 5-of-6 from the field (4-of-5 from three-point range). Ruths added 13 points in the half, while Stone had 12 points and four assists. Senior Carson Oren led the Spartans (10-11, 2-8 UAA) with nine points.
In the second half, the Bears hit three-pointers in three straight trips down the floor to extend their lead to 76-50 with 11:42 remaining. Freshman Sean Wallis found Stone for the first trey, O’Boyle for the second, and Stone again for the third to force a CWRU timeout. O’Boyle finished with a career-high 22 points on 7-of-9 field goal shooting.
Stone added 20 points and eight assists, while Ruths netted 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Nading chipped in with 14 points on 6-of-9 from the field. Oren finished with a team-high 14 points for CWRU.
Washington U. returns to action Sunday, Feb. 12 versus Emory University. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. at the WU Field House.
