Worcester State 84, Becker 66

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team had four players reach double figures in scoring as the Lancers ran past the visiting Hawks of Becker College by the final tally of, 84-66, Thursday evening in Lancer Gymnasium in a non-conference match up. The win gets Worcester State back to the .500 level at, 11-11, while Becker falls to 3-18.

Every Lancer scored in the first half as they raced out to a 13 point halftime lead, 46-33. Sophomore Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) led the way with 14 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field. The Lancers shot 48.3 percent from the field in the first session. Becker was led by freshman Chris Finnimore (Worcester, MA) who scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.

The Lancers extended their lead in the second half to as many as 23 points. Becker was able to get their deficit down to 11 points with 5:34 remaining but a Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) jumper followed by a Josh Barry (Sheffield, MA) lay-up quelled the rally as the Lancers rolled to the win.

Spont finished with 20 points for the victors. Freshman Randy Gratton (Ware, MA) added 14 and Ryan Hopkins added 13 along with 5 assists. Junior Bobby Wilson (Hamden, CT) chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Finnimore finished with a game-high 21 points for the Hawks in the loss. Senior Jeff Kotkowski (Melrose, MA) also had a big day as he notched a double-double scoring 15 points and hauling in 15 boards.

Worcester State will return to MASCAC action on Saturday when they host MCLA. Becker College will visit Lasell College on Saturday as well.
