Five Ozarks’ players scored in double figures and combined to shoot 30-of-45 (66%) from the floor in the win. While Joyner’s hot shooting was one highlight of the night, it was Brad Johnson’s take away with 1.2 seconds remaining that sealed the win in regulation. Johnson stripped UT-Tyler’s high-scoring guard Brandon Weasby of the ball as Weasby went up for desperation three-pointer.
Ozarks (13-9, 13-6) held just a 47-45 lead at halftime despite shooting an astounding 17-of-24 (70%) from the field in the first half. UT-Tyler (8-14, 8-11) stayed in the game thanks to a solid shooting performance on their part. The Patriots shot 57 percent from the field in the game, including 40 percent from the three-point line, while using a balanced scoring attack that saw four Patriots reach double figures.
The second half was as close as the first half, with both teams utilizing the fast break on numerous occasions. With the Eagles holding a narrow 70-69 advantage at the midway point of the second half, Ozarks’ Chris Clark followed up a Clint McHenry missed jumper with a one-handed dunk at the 10:40 mark. Clark’s highlight reel dunk gave the Eagles a boost of energy and ignited the Ozarks’ fans. After Clark’s dunk, UT-Tyler held the lead for just over three minutes in the remainder of the contest.
Joyner was followed in the scoring column by Habeeb Kareem with 18 points, Scott McCall with 14 points, Johnson with 12 points and McHenry with 11 points. Kareem collected a team-best 7 rebounds. Johnson finished with 11 assists.
The Eagles will host UT-Dallas on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Saturday’s game has been designated as “Senior Day” and Hall of Fame day. Seniors David Hamilton, Brad Johnson, Josh Joyner, Scott McCall and Jacob Sibley will be recognized following the women's game as will the members of the Ozarks’ Sports Hall of Fame.
