Elms 82, Lasell 72

CHICOPEE, Mass. — Elms College junior guard David Williams (Hartford, CT) netted a game-high 25 points and the Blazers held off a furious late-game rally to post an 82-72 win over Lasell College in a key North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division men’s basketball showdown at the Maguire Center on Thursday night.

The Blazers won their fourth straight game to improve to 16-6 overall and remained atop the NAC West Division at 11-1. That 11-1 mark currently ties Elms College with Husson College for the best record in-conference. Lasell, the West Division’s second place team, fell to 10-11 overall, 8-3 NAC.

The Blazers appeared to be heading for victory following a dunk by senior forward Lonnie Branyon III (West Haven, CT) that gave Elms College a 63-54 lead with 5:55 remaining.

Lasell, however, responded with a 12-0 to take a 66-63 lead with 3:28 remaining, capped off by a 3-pointer by freshman forward Brad Caravoulias (Dracut, MA).

Elms College then put the game out of reach with a 14-0 run that included three free throws by junior guard Justin Davis (Dix Hills, NY) after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, a conventional 3-point play and four free throws all by Williams.

The Blazers placed two other players in double figures, including Branyon’s 17 points and freshman forward Antoine Holder’s (Hartford, CT) 10-point effort. Junior point guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) finished with nine points and a game-high 12 assists.

Sophomore forward Jaime Crawford (Coral Springs, FL) netted a team-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers for Lasell, which had five players finish in double figures.

Elms College returns to conference play when it plays at Becker College on Tuesday, January 14. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
