Bethany 86, Washington and Jefferson 75

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Senior forward Matt Drahos (Wheeling, W.Va./John Marshall) totaled 38 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks as Bethany clinched the regular-season Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship following an 86-75 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

Drahos connected on 14-of-28 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range, to lift the Bison (19-4, 10-0) to their 14th consecutive win.

Bethany used a 12-2 stretch over a nine-minute span of the first half to take an 18-8 lead at the 7:40 mark. Drahos’ three-point play with 4:26 remaining in the half gave the Bison a 29-13 advantage and his three-pointer as the first half ended sent BC into the locker room with a 37-25 lead.

The Bison started the second half on a 15-7 run to push their lead to 20 points (52-32) and Drahos drilled another triple at the 14:20 mark to up the advantage to 59-34.

The Presidents (8-14, 6-3) outscored Bethany by a 29-16 margin in the final 8:39 to narrow the final deficit.

Senior forward Mike Drahos (Wheeling, W.Va./John Marshall) posted 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bison, while senior guard Scott Mezyk (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont-Hilltop) added 10 points and seven assists.

Bethany made 41 percent (26-of-64) of its shot attempts and dished out 18 assists.

Freshman center Josip Lucic-Jozak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead W&J. Junior guards Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) added 13 and 12, respectively, for the Presidents, who shot 44 percent (31-of-70) and held a 45-37 rebounding edge. W&J was plagued by 20 turnovers.

Washington & Jefferson will look to snap its two-game losing streak on Saturday when it hosts Thiel on Alumni/Senior Night. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 pm.
