Richard Stockton 86, Rutgers-Camden 78

CAMDEN, NJ — Junior guard Kevin Holmes (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) scored 19 points to lead six players in double figures and the Richard Stockton College men’s basketball team survived a second-half scare to hold off Rutgers University-Camden, 86-78, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
Stockton, which has won four of its last five games, improves to 15-7 overall and 10-5 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-20 and 0-15 with its 17th consecutive loss. The Ospreys have won their last 43 games against Rutgers-Camden, dating back to the 1983-84 season, and now hold a 51-7 lead in the all-time series.
Stockton overcame a five-point deficit (20-15) and bounced back to take a 43-35 halftime lead before seemingly taking control of the game. The visitors opened up a 15-point second-half lead on a pair of occasions, the last being at 55-40 with 16:23 remaining.
Trailing 65-52, Rutgers-Camden went on a 19-9 run to cut the gap to 74-71 on a free throw by junior guard Dane Nicholson (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) with 4:25 remaining. That run was led by sophomore guard Amir Fantroyal (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek), who scored eight of his game- and career-high 25 points during that span.
Stockton, however, responded with a jumper by sophomore guard Mario Lancioni (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) and a layup by senior forward Sid Jackson (Brooklyn, NY/Liberty County) to pad its lead to 78-71. The Raptors never came closer than five points the rest of the way, cutting the gap to 78-73 on a jumper by Fantroyal.
In addition to 19 points from Holmes, Stockton received 16 from Jackson, 15 from senior forward Tobias Smith (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) and 13 from Lancioni. Sophomore forward Jon Greene (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) and senior guard Chris Jones (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) each added 10 points.
Stockton, which held a 45-30 advantage off the boards, received 11 rebounds apiece from Smith and Holmes.
Fantroyal had an outstanding night for the Raptors, going 7-for-13 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, and hitting eight of his 12 foul shots. His 25 points passed his previous high of 18, accomplished against Stockton (Feb. 9, 2005) and tied against Montclair State (Feb. 4, 2006). He also added six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Freshman guard Wayne Smalls (Camden, NJ/Medical Arts) added 19 points for the Raptors, while freshman center Antoine Miller (Camden, NJ/Medical Arts) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday when they entertain Richard Stockton College in an 8 p.m. NJAC game. Montclair State plays an 8 p.m. conference game at New Jersey City University the same night.
