After four lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the game, Maryville made it seem as if the game would be a wash-out going into half time up 39-23, but Fontbonne surprised the Saints and came back late in the second half. After Maryville had as much as a 22 point lead during the last 20 minutes, the Griffins cut the lead little by little until they were down by five with only 20 seconds remaining. However, Fontbonne failed to take advantage and Maryville’s Matt Regan went on to seal the win at the free-throw line. The Saints took 30 shots from the charity stripe during the contest compared to Fontbonne’s measly 11.
It was a big night for Regan as he scored his 1,000th career point during the first half of tonight’s match. The senior guard finished with a game-high 21 points for a total of 1,012 so far in his career and pulled down five rebounds.
Ryan Klein finished with 14 points including a monster dunk in the second half to get the crowd on their feet. Tonight was Klein’s first time back in double digits in eight games hitting 5-of-9 from the floor and adding three free throws. Teammate Matt McCarthy started in tonight’s lineup in place of center Stephen Bash who is taking some time off to heal an injury. McCarthy chipped in with 12 points and recorded four rebounds.
Ben Hebl and Tim Elwell also helped in the evening’s efforts adding eight and five points respectively and dishing out four assists a piece. Elwell also tallied a game-high five steals.
Fontbonne’s Brian Fogerty led the Griffin’s offensive efforts with 14 points while Justin Storandt ended with 12. Patrick McCoy, who leads the conference with nearly 17 points a game, finished with just 10 points tonight, all of which came in the second half.
The Saints will now get ready to take on Westminster College this Saturday at the Blue Jay’s home court. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
The following game on February 15th marks the Saints’s last regular season home game. Prior to the game, Maryville’s six seniors will be honored for their outstanding careers here at Maryville.
