St. John's 73, Macalester 64

ST. PAUL, Minn. — February 8, 2006 - Tyler Westman scored 16 points to lead five St. John’s players in double figures as the Johnnies topped Macalester 73-64 Wednesday night in St. Paul. St. John’s improves to 13-9 overall and 11-6 in the MIAC with its fourth straight win. Macalester drops to 7-16, 6-12 in MIAC play.

Westman was joined in double figures by Craig Schafer and Scott Schafer with 12 points each, and Ryan Lieser and Paul Henrichs with 11 apiece. Craig Schafer grabbed eight rebounds, while Lieser and Matt Ohme each dished out five assists.

SJU extends its winning streak to four games and keeps pace with Gustavus tied for third in the MIAC standings. St. John’s is 8-3 over its last 11 games. The Johnnies had lost their previous five games at Macalester Gymnasium but this time shot 49% from the floor.

Tom Conboy had 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists to pace Macalester. It was his 12th 20-point game of the season. Brian Ranwick came off the bench for 11 points and three assists. The Scots went just 7-for-30 from three-point range and on the night the two teams combined to go 12-for-49 from behind the arc (25%).

Macalester enjoyed a small lead throughout most of the first half, but SJU ended the period on a 14-4 run over the final 5:11 of the half. The Johnnies extended their advantage to 13 points at 46-33 with 16:23 left in the game by beginning the second half on a 10-3 run.

St. John’s plays Saturday (Feb. 11) at home against Hamline. Macalester is off until next Wednesday (Feb. 15) when it plays at Gustavus.
