The Lancers, who are 7-17 in their second year of full-fledged Division I competition, used a 13-3 run from the 12:13 to 10:46 marks to break open the game against the Hornets (9-11).
This run allowed LU some much needed breathing room after Shenandoah played its hosts close for the first 20 minutes of play. The Hornets used a 14 for 26 (53.8 percent) performance from the field in the first to trail by just four, 40-36, at the break. SU then opened the second stanza with the first four points to tie the game at 40-40.
From this point on, the two teams were tied on five occasions and never separated by more than four points before a 7-0 LU run gave the Lancers a 59-52 lead by the 10:46 mark. Shenandoah finally snapped this streak with a Quan Griffin trey 16 seconds later, but Longwood answered with a 6-0 spurt to push its lead into double digits for the first time with 8:16 left.
Coach Rob Harris’ club was able to cut the deficit back into single digits twice, but got no closer than eight points following an Antwon Townsend jumper at the 6:03 mark.
The margin remained no more than 13 points before the hosts pulled away over the final 2:35 of the contest. Brandon Giles hit the second of his two consecutive three-pointers to give LU a 14-point bulge at this point, and this bucket also became the start of a 13-5 Lancer run to finish the game.
Sophomore Jeremiah Lawrence co-led all scorers with 17 points while Stevie Johns added 15, Mouktar Fawehinmi 12 and James Brodie 10 for the Hornets.
Dana Smith matched Lawrence’ 17 points to go along with his game-high 10 rebounds for Longwood. This performance also helped the Lancers also outrebound SU 39-28.
