Elmhurst 79, Carthage 58

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (7-14, 3-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to No. 26 Elmhurst College (15-7, 7-4 CCIW), 79-58, on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Elmhurst jumped out to an 11-point lead, 18-7, at 13:03. The Bluejays led by as much as 22 points in the first half, 34-12, at 4:54 before the Red Men closed the gap to 12 points at the break, 39-27. The second half was all Elmhurst, as the Bluejays pulled away to a 25-point lead, 57-32, at 14:41. The lead grew to 26 points, 77-51, at 5:06. Carthage got no closer than 19 points on three occasions, the last at 77-58, at 1:28, as the Bluejays cruised to a 21-point victory, 79-58. Elmhurst blistered the nets with a 56 percent field-goal percentage (30-54), including 58 percent in the second half (15-26). Carthage shot just 31 percent (19-61), including 29 percent in the second period (9-31). Four Elmhurst players scored in double figures. Brent Ruch had 18 points, 15 rebounds and four assists. Chris Martin had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Nick Michael scored 14 points with four assists, and Mike Sayre added 11 points. Kyle Jeffery led the Red Men with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Mark Morrison had 13 points and seven rebounds. Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Saturday, Feb. 11 to take on No. 15 North Central College at Gregory Arena (7:30 p.m.).
