Allegheny 86, Oberlin 55

MEADVILLE, Pa. — The" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/hollihan5.jpg">The Allegheny College Gators (9-12, 5-8 NCAC) opened a 25-point first half lead against the Oberlin Yeomen (1-20, 1-10 NCAC), running away with an 86-55 NCAC victory on Wednesday night. Freshman Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg/Knoch) (right) blocked a school record six shots in the winning effort.

Bill Babe (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) hit five three pointers en route to a game-high 20 points while Matt Majzlik (Monaca/Hopewell) and Casey McCloskey (Erie/Cathedral Prep) scored 15 and 10.

Oberlin came on strong, scoring the first six points of the game before the Gators rattled off 15 straight points, taking a nine point lead six and a half minutes into the game. After Oberlin cut their deficit to three, the Gators once again opened a run, this one 12-0 to take the lead to 15 points at 28-13. The first-half lead grew to as many as 25, before Oberlin closed it to 20 at the break.

Oberlin closed to within 13 points nearly five minutes into the second half before the Gators put their foot on the gas pedal, increasing the lead to 33 before emptying the bench in the 31-point win.

Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va.) and Hollihan scored nine and eight points respectively, with Majzlik pulling down eight rebounds to lead the team. McCloskey led the way with five assists, while Hollihan and Brad Witucki (Natrona Heights/Highlands) each dished out four scores.

Oberlin was led by guard Quinton Spencer, who scored 19 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, while Omari Hall scored 11. Mike Loll missed a double-double by a point, pulling down 10 rebounds and scoring nine points. Spencer also dished out a game-high six assists.

The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, February 11, when the team travels to Granville, Ohio to face the Big Red of Denison University in the second game of a women’s/men’s double header, with the men’s game tipping off at 3:00 p.m.
