Worcester State 77, Framingham State 71

WORCESTER, Ma — Senior guard Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) scored Worcester State’s last 11 points of regulation and their first bucket in overtime as the Lancers overcame a 13 point second half deficit Tuesday evening defeating the visiting Rams of Framingham State College by the final score of, 77-71, in Lancer Gymnasium. The win improves Worcester State to 10-11 (5-4 MASCAC) while Framingham State falls to 9-11 (3-6 MASCAC.)

Framingham State led, 31-29, at the break as they got 9 points from junior forward Derek Wigman (Pembroke, MA). Worcester State was led by junior Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT) who finished the half with a double-double as he scored 10 points and grabbed 11 boards.

Worcester State scored the first two baskets of the second half and led for the final time of the half, 31-31. Framingham State led by 13 with 5:41 remaining in the half before the Lancers began their comeback. With 2:43 remaining and the Lancers trailing, 61-51, sophomore Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) hit two free throws to begin the Lancer comeback. Hopkins proceeded to hit a three pointer. Framingham State’s Anthony Washington (Providence, RI) hit a pair of free throws to give the Rams an 8 point advantage. Hopkins then rattled off a pair of trey’s and a lay-up with 17 seconds remaining to tie the game at, 63-63, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime, Hopkins hit a pair of free throws with 2:46 remaining to tie the game for the final time at, 69-69, Rembert got a lay-up to give the Lancers the lead and Worcester Sate went on to the six point victory.

Hopkins led the way for the Lancers finishing with 26 points. Rembert was enormous as he amassed 20 points and 19 rebounds. Freshman Tyler Hopkins (Oxford, MA) also reached double digits for the Lancers with 12 points. Framingham Sate was led by Wigman who totaled 26 points on 9 of 23 shooting. Washington was the other Rams to reach double figures with 14 points.

Worcester State will return to action on Thursday when they host Becker College. Framingham State will host Salem State College on Saturday.
