The Bishops defeated the Captains back on Jan. 17 in Rocky Mount, NC, winning 93-80. CNU took control early, getting out to a six-point lead, 14-8, with 14:42 left in the opening half on two Jeremy Romeo free throws.
NC Wesleyan battled back to take the lead, 19-18 with 12:22 left in the first half on two free throws by Lenny Hall. The Captains would regain the lead once again and sprint out to an eight-point advantage, 33-25 with 5:28 left.
The Bishops would cut it to within one, 33-32, with 3:13 left, but CNU answered and scampered back out to a six-point lead, thanks to a driving lay-up by Romeo who made the shot and was fouled. He made the free throw which gave him 1,000 points. He would add a three-pointer with 52 seconds left to finish the stanza with 13, but more importantly, he gave the Captains a 42-34 lead at the break.
In the half, NCW was 12-of-31 (39%) from the floor, 2-of-10 on threes and 8-of-8 from the line. CNU finished 18-of-35 (51%) from the field, 2-of-8 from behind the arc and 4-of-6 from the stripe.
In the second half, the Bishops would cut the lead to two points, 44-42, with 17:21 left. The Captains responded with a run of their own, out scoring NC Wesleyan 23-7 over nine minutes to lead 65-49. The Bishops would get as close as eight points, 74-66 with 1:26 remaining. CNU would hit 5-of-6 free throws over the final 90 seconds to secure the win.
For the half, NCW was just 10-of-41 (24%) from the floor, 4-of-16 (25%) on threes and 8-of-11 (73%) from the foul line. The Captains were 13-of-26 (50%) from the field, 5-of-7 (71%) from behind the arc and 6-of-10 from the line.
For the game, the Bishops finished 22-of-72 (31%) from the field, 6-of-26 (23%) on threes and 16-of-19 (84%) from the charity stripe. Christopher Newport finished 31-of-61 (51%) from the floor, 7-of-15 (47%) from behind the arc and 10-of-16 (63%) from the stripe.
NC Wesleyan's big duo of Jarmel Arrington and Lenny Hall finished a combined 11-of-42 for 36 points. Hall himself had 36 in their win at NC Wesleyan last month. Arrington led NC Wesleyan with 20 points while Hall finished with 16. Reggie Washington added seven points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Romeo led the Captains with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting including 5-of-8 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the line. He also had eight rebounds and three assists. Mark Blasingame added 10 points and 11 rebounds, Donta Selden finished with 10 points and Davon Barton contributed 10 points and six assists.
The Bishops are now 7-14 overall and 5-3 in the USA South. CNU improves to 16-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
The Captains return to action Saturday for Hall of Fame Day. Averett comes to town as tip is set for 4 pm.
