The Wildcats women’s squad started things off at 6:00 PM with a 50-71 loss to the Storm. With the loss, the Wildcats move to 5-17 on the year and 4-8 in NEAC play. With the win, Keuka improves to 11-8 on the year and 10-2 in conference play.
The Storm took control early in the game and led from the opening tip to the final whistle. The Wildcats made numerous comeback-attempts and cut the lead to just two points, at 26-28, with two minutes remaining in the first half when Ashley Agresta (’06, Amsterdam / Galway HS) hit a three-pointer. Agresta finished with a team-high 16 points and a game-high two blocks. She was 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point line.
However, the Storm, as it did in the previous meeting between the two teams, would pull away from the Wildcats in the second stanza.
Alison Berwanger finished the day with a game-high 22 points, four assists, nine rebounds and a game-high five steals for the Storm. Keuka’s Pam Gardener had 13 points and an 11-rebound night to record a double-double
A great day from beyond the three-point arch, Cazenovia hung tight with the Storm by going 10-for-18 from three-point land in the game. Keuka, who shot 43 percent from the field, was 3-for-7 from three.
In the men’s game, Keuka earned the 58-69 win by gaining the lead in the final nine seconds of the first half and nurturing the advantage to a double-digit lead late in the second stanza. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 6-16 on the year and 5-8 in NEAC play. The Storm improves to 12-8 on the year and 8-5 in the NEAC.
With the lead changing or tied six times in the first half, the Storm’s Robert McDowell hit a lay-up, under the basket, with nine seconds remaining in the first stanza to give Keuka the one-point 27-28 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, the Wildcats drew a 51-51 tie when Sedric Hawkins (’06, Syracuse / Henninger HS) made a low-post power-move to the basket with 7:49 on the clock.
Keuka would answer back with a 11-3 run over the next five minutes of play to force Cazenovia to foul with two minutes remaining. Already in foul trouble, the Wildcats were unable to mount the exciting comeback as the Storm went 13-for18 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Keuka out-scored Cazenovia in the paint 14-34 in the game.
Joshua Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS) finished with a game-high 20 points and tied for a game-high three steals with Keuka’s David Hanif. Winans has now scored in double-figures in ten of his last 12 games.
Cazenovia’s Steven Zavackis (’07, Carthage / Carthage HS) had an unlikely game-high seven assists for the Wildcats. A season-high for assists, Zavackis also finished with a game-high 12 rebounds. He was the only student-athlete to finish the game with double-figure rebounds.
Four players from Keuka finished in double-figures points. Off the bench, Emmanuel Reaves finished with a team-high 16 points, a team-high eight rebounds and a block.
The Cazenovia men’s and women’s squads are slated to play next on Sat., Feb. 11. They host the visiting SUNY Purchase Panthers at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, respectively in Cazenovia, N.Y.
