Mooney’s performance was nothing short of sensational as he converted 13 of this 33 field goal attempts, including a 6 for 16 effort from three-point range. With his outing, Mooney became the first player in Mount Saint Vincent history to score more than 500 points in a season twice during a career as he has now scored 507 points this season. He has scored 1,683 career points, leaving Mooney 11 points away from reaching second place all-time in Mount Saint Vincent history, and exactly 100 points shy of tying the Dolphin record for points in a career.
Mooney scored 18 points during a first half in which Mount Saint Vincent and Medgar Evers were even at 40 when halftime rolled around, but a 33-19 Cougar rebounding advantage during the first 20 minutes set the stage for a letdown by the Mount during the second half of play. Medgar Evers finished the game with a 67-37 rebounding edge, leading to a 26-9 advantage in second-chance points. Thanks to the rebounding dominance, the Cougars enjoyed a 10-0 run midway through the second half that turned a 64-62 Medgar Evers lead with 10:25 remaining in the game into a 74-62 lead two minutes later. From there, Mount Saint Vincent never trimmed the Cougar lead to less than eight points.
Besides Mooney’s heroics, Charles Hernandez (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scanlan) added 13 points, Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond’s) scored 11 points and a team-high four steals, and Greg Casey (Mount Vernon, NY/Blessed Sacrament) finished with 10 points. The Dolphins committed only 13 turnovers, and forced 20 by Medgar Evers, but the Mount’s struggles on the boards did them in.
With three games remaining in the regular season, Mount Saint Vincent is currently in ninth place in Skyline Conference play, but only mere percentage points out of a post-season bid. With three Skyline Conference games remaining, every outing is crucial for the Mount. Their postseason contention continues on Saturday, Feb. 11 when the Dolphins travel to Farmingdale State for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
