Senior center Reggie Magnusson scored his 1,000th point of his career and sophomore guard Matt Nestheide scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Centre College men's basketball team to an 89-76 win over Oglethorpe University, Sunday, Feb. 5, in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the SCAC. The loss drops Oglethorpe's record to 11-10 overall and 4-6 in league play.
The first half was tightly contested with six ties and seven lead changes. With the score tied at 16 apiece, Oglethorpe used a 12-4 run to take the biggest lead of the half for either team 28-22 with 8:13 to go.
Centre answered with a run of its own outscoring the Stormy Petrels 10-3 to pull within 31-30 at the 4:09 mark. Trailing by 34-30 under the three-minute mark, the Colonels closed the first half on a 9-1 run to take a 39-35 lead into halftime.
After missing on his first attempt to start the second half, Magnusson grabbed his own rebound and scored on the put back for his 1,000th point of his career. That basket sparked a 20-5 run by Centre to open the second half to put the Colonels ahead 59-40 with 13:30 to play.
Over the next 7:47, the Stormy Petrels climbed back into the game, trimming the lead to six points (74-68). Oglethorpe would get no closer as it was outscored 15-8 to end the game.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Colonels led by Nestheide's 27 points on 8 of 11 shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. The sophomore guard scored 18 of his 27 points in the first half to help Centre shoot 50% (14-28). Nestheide also tallied six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Magnusson finished with 22 points on 10 of 13 from the floor. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds in 29 minutes of play. Magnusson is only the 23rd player in Centre men's basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career and has accomplished the feat in only his third season. He now has 1,014 career-points putting him 21st in school history in career-points.
Junior forward Matt Jacobson recorded a season-high 25 points on 8 of 13 shooting, including 5 of 9 from long range and 4 of 5 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Thomas Britt added 10 points and three rebounds and senior forward Coy Zerhusen notched a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with three points, five assists, two steals and a block.
Oglethorpe also placed four players in double-figures, led by Eric Dickinson's 20 points on 6 of 11 shooting. Ahmed Kareem Shaheed scored 18 points before fouling out in the second half. Alex Watterson scored 14 points off the bench and Terry Bailey added 12 points in the loss.
Centre will next play Friday, Feb. 10, when they host DePauw University. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
