The Titans (7-14, 4-5 PAC), who have not lost to W&J at home since the 1939-1940 season, drained 19-of-48 three-pointers en route to the victory.
Westminster held a slim lead throughout the first seven minutes until a 10-2 W&J spurt gave the Presidents (8-13, 6-2 PAC) a 28-21 lead with 11:49 left in the first half. Sophomore center Tony Lewis (Mayfield Hts., Ohio/Orange) scored five points during the rally.
The Titans took the lead back, 43-42, after a Whitlow trifecta at the 5:17 mark and David Richards canned three free throws just before the first half ended to send the teams into halftime tied, 55-55. The first half featured seven lead changes and seven ties.
Westminster ran out to a 63-57 lead in the first two minutes of the second half; however, an 11-0 W&J run pushed the Presidents ahead, 68-63, with 15:15 left on the clock.
Whitlow and Craig Hannon knocked down back-to-back triples for a 78-72 WC advantage four minutes later, but the Presidents once again rallied and took an 85-84 lead after junior guard Brandon Studer’s (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) lay-up at the 4:59 mark.
The Titans upped their lead back to eight points (103-95) with 38 seconds left, but Studer and junior guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) drained three-pointers five seconds apart to bring W&J to within 103-101 with 16 seconds remaining. Whitlow and Hannon then made two free throws each on the next two possessions to clinch the Titan win.
Whitlow added six rebounds to his 28 points in just 26 minutes of action. Mark DeMonaco netted 25 points on 6-of-19 shooting, while Hannon dropped in 23 points and grabbed seven boards. The Titans shot 44 percent overall (30-of-69) and drained 28 of 31 foul shots.
Freshman center Josip Lucic-Jozak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) paced the Presidents with 23 points (9-of-10 shooting) and 13 rebounds. Koch also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, while Studer posted 22 markers on 9-of-21 shooting. Freshman point guard Nate Burton (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points, while notching five rebounds and four assists. W&J shot 53 percent (42-of-79) and held a 47-35 edge on the glass.
The Presidents return to action on Wednesday evening when they host PAC-leading Bethany at 8:00 pm.
