Salve Regina 73, Wentworth 50

BOSTON, Mass. — Paced by four players in double figures – including senior guard Matt Coute (Somerset, Mass.), who scored 20 points (on 8-for-15) shooting) and dished out seven assists – the Salve Regina University men’s basketball team (13-8, 7-6 Commonwealth Coast Conference) cruised to a 73-50 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology (9-11, 5-7) in a CCC contest at Tansey Gymnasium.

The Seahawks would open the game with a 23-10 run over the first 11:25 and would never look back, taking a 35-25 lead at the break. Over the first 20 minutes, Salve shot 16-for-29 (55.2 percent) from the floor and got 10 points and five boards from sophomore forward Steve Walsh (Manchester, N.H.), while Coute had four assists in the first half.

After the Leopards closed the gap to within eight (35-27) on a senior forward Frankie Hall (Boston, Mass.) basket to open the second half of play, the Seahawks used a 13-2 run to increase their lead to 19 (48-29) and would lead by as much as 29 late in the contest.

Junior forward Matt Grendal (Foxboro, Mass.) contributed with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists, while sophomore guard Chris Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.) had 14 points (on 6-for-7 shooting). Walsh finished the game with 11 points and eight rebounds.

For Wentworth, freshman forward Weonard Bynes (Bridgepoert, Conn.) came off the bench to score 13 points, while Hall chipped in with eight. For the game, the Leopards were held to 36.4 percent shooting from the floor and allowed Salve to shoot 52.5 percent.
