Villa Julie 87, Cazenovia 44

STEVENSON, Md. — The Cazenovia College Wildcats men’s and women’s basketball teams, in their Sat., Feb. 4, double-header, were swept by the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Conference power-house Villa Julie College Mustangs 49-60 and 44-87, respectively.

The opening game, featuring the Wildcats women’s squad, saw the Mustangs lose a commanding first-half lead as the Wildcats rallied to bring the game close in the second half. Ultimately falling 49-60, the Wildcats move to 5-16 on the year and 4-7 in NEAC play.

Cazenovia, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the first-half, cut the Mustang’s lead to four points on an Amy Mason (’06, Whitesboro / Whitesboro HS) lay-up with 8:56 left in the second-half. The Mustangs would rally and pull away from the Wildcats as Villa Julie’s Amanda Courter went 5-for-6 from the charity-stripe in the final minute of play.

The Mustangs’ Andrea Somerville led all scorers with 14 points and recorded a game-high eight rebounds.

Cazenovia was led by point guard Ashley Lewis (’07, Whitesboro / Whitesboro HS). Lewis finished with a team-high 16 points and a team-high four assists.

The second game of the double-header, featuring the Cazenovia men’s squad, saw the first-place Mustangs dominate inside. Out-scoring the Wildcats 20-50 in the paint, the Mustangs cruised to a 44-87 victory over the Wildcats. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 6-15 on the season and 5-7 in NEAC play.

The Mustangs, who led 21-45 at the intermission and by as many as 44 points in the second half, dominated the paint and forced a season-high three Wildcats to foul out.

Bryan Bishop (’06, Watertown / South Jefferson HS) led the way for the Wildcats by scoring 14 points and snagging four rebounds on the night.

The Mustangs’ Steve Segears finished with a game-high 19 points in the victory. Anthony Fitzgerald finished with a double-double for Villa Julie. Fitzgerald pulled down 12 boards and recorded 13 points on the day.

Cazenovia is next in action on Tues., Feb. 7. The men’s and women’s teams face their local NEAC rivals, the Keuka College Storm, at 8:00 PM and 6:00 PM, respectively.
