UW-Whitewater 91, UW-Superior 63

SUPERIOR, Wis. — MEN’S BASKETBALL … Warhawks Coast to Victory at UW-Superior



The Warhawks stayed in the hunt for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 91-63 victory at UW-Superior Saturday afternoon. The 91 points scored by the Warhawks is the most points they scored in a game since December 17, 2005, and this is the second time this season they scored at least 90 points. The Warhawks improved to 15-5 overall with the victory and 9-3 in the WIAC while UW-Superior falls to 5-16 overall and 0-12 in the WIAC.

UW-Superior was within three points of the Warhawks with about nine minutes left in the first half, but the Warhawks scored eight straight points to take control of the game. The Warhawks shot an efficient 64.3% from the field in the first half as they built a comfortable 44-26 lead.

The Warhawks continued to build on their lead in the second half going up by as many as 36 points with nine minutes left to play. The Warhawks finished the game shooting 55.9% from the field and 46.2% from beyond the three point line.

Melvin Williams (sr, Milwaukee/Riverside) led UW-Whitewater with 19 points on 9-12 shooting while Giovanni Riley (jr, Milwaukee/Marshall) chipped in with 14 points. Jeremy Manchester (sr, Racine/St. Catherine’s), Rob Perry (so, Milwaukee/Dominican) and Kori Vernon (fr, Madison/Memorial) all had 10 points in the game for the Warhawks. UW-Superior’s Leonard Cobb (jr, Detroit, MI) led all scorers with 27 points in the game.

The Warhawks defeated UW-Superior earlier this season 88-58 in the Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks will travel to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, February 8 for a key WIAC game starting at 7 p.m. The Warhawks next and final home game of the regular season will be Saturday, February 11 against UW-River Falls starting at 3 p.m.
