UW-Whitewater set a season high for points scored in a game in their 95-75 triumph of UW-Superior Saturday afternoon in Superior. The Warhawks’ previous season high for points scored was 86 points against Colorado College, and this is the first time they reached 90 points in a game since they scored 91 against UW-Superior January 24, 2004. The 170 combined points for the two teams ranks seventh-highest in UW-Whitewater history.
The Warhawks led the entire game and established a 57-41 lead at the end of the first half. UW-Whitewater started the game with a 10-0 run in the first three minutes to take control of the game. The Warhawks shot 68.6% from the field in the first half, making 24 of their 35 shot attempts.
The Yellowjackets were unable to cut the lead down to single digits in the second half as the Warhawks were able to maintain their lead and go on to a comfortable 20 point victory. Amy Morris (sr, Johnsburg, IL) and Lindsey Buechner (so, Cross Plains/Middleton) both had career highs scoring against UW-Superior. Morris scored 27 points on 11-20 shooting and Buechner had 23 points on 9-11 shooting. Morris’ previous career high was 23 points against Cardinal Stritch November 22, 2005 while Buechner’s previous career high was 22 points against Nebraska Wesleyan November 19, 2005 and UW-Superior December 10, 2005. Katie Moench (jr, Superior) led the Yellowjackets with a season-high 28 points.
The Warhawks shot 59.7% (40-67) from the field for the game which is their season high shooting percentage for a game and the fifth best shooting performance for a game in school history. Their previous most efficient shooting performance this season was January 3 against UW-Eau Claire when they shot 53.6% for the game.
The Warhawks improved to 11-10 overall with the win and 5-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Superior falls to 4-16 overall and 0-12 in the WIAC.
The Warhawks defeated UW-Superior earlier this season by a score of 79-63 in Whitewater.
UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, February 8 in the Kachel Gymnasium for a WIAC game starting at 7 p.m. The Warhawks fell to the Pointers 86-57 in Stevens Point earlier this season.
