Sul Ross State 126, Concordia-Austin 105

02/04/06 — ALPINE, Tx.- Sul Ross sizzled from the floor with a 63% shooting performance as the Lobos grabbed a 126-105 conference win over visiting Concordia University.

C.J. Acosta was the Lobo floor general posting a career and season best 31 points and 12 rebounds, his fourth double-double for 2005-06. Sidney Hooper supplied 27 points while posting 8 boards. Tury Escobar contributed 13 points while Aaron Hardwick and Moises Morales posted 10 points each.

The Tornadoes started with a 3-point jumper by CUA’s Joel McDonald 27 seconds into the contest. The Lobos stole the lead with a 3-point jumper by Hooper to put Sul Ross on top 8-7 at the 17:41 mark. Concordia then built a healthy 15-point advantage including an 18-6 run. The Lobos rallied and tied the game at 54 with 57 seconds left until the break. Sul Ross regained the lead and went to intermission with a 56-54 lead.

Concordia tied the game 17 seconds into the second period. Sul Ross held CUA to a 7-point spread and notched the contest at 62 at the 18:16 mark. Sully then spread the gap by 10 and went on a 10-3 run and led 88-73 with 12:06 left in regulation. The Lobos held the Tornadoes at bay climbing out to 16-point spreads twice with under 3 minutes left in the contest. Sul Ross increased the lead to 21 in the closing seconds for the 126-105 final.

Steve Nolan led the Tornadoes with 18 points while Max Valentino had a team best 5 rebounds.

Sul Ross improves to 9-11 for the year and 9-8 in league play.

The Lobos will face Hardin-Simmons next Thursday in Abilene.
