Catholic 77, St. Mary's (Md.) 60

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — The St. Mary's College men's basketball team gave a determined effort but came up on the short end of the scoreboard against Catholic University in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the CAC. The Seahawks fall to 8-12 overall and 3-7 in the conference with their third consecutive defeat.

The Cardinals claimed a 33-24 advantage at halftime and never trailed in the second half. St. Mary's rallied to reduce the deficit to 50-47 with 9:52 to play after a made lay-up from junior forward Spencer Way III.

With six minutes to play, Catholic's Aaron Kelly and St. Mary's sophomore guard Tyson Lesesne were charged with double technical fouls. Kelly picked up a second technical and automatic ejection with his reaction to the original call on the play, but the Cardinals eventual pulled away for the victory despite the fireworks.

Junior guard Mike Wasilenko hit a jumper and freshman guard Nick Olivero converted a miss from junior forward Patrick Dwyer to give Catholic a 61-52 lead with 4:43 remaining beginning an 18-8 run to give the Cardinals the 17-point victory.

Dwyer scored 17 points for Catholic to lead all scorers in the contest. Senior forward/center Shane Sowden added 15 points while Olivero added 11 and senior guard Pat Satalin had 10 points. Dwyer and Sowden each posted a double-double on the afternoon with 11 and ten rebounds, respectively.

The Seahawks were led by Lesesne with 14 points. Way III scored 11 points while junior guard Dan Engelstad contributed with nine points. Freshman center Calvin Wise also made a strong showing for St. Mary's with eight points and a team-high ten rebounds.

St. Mary's will return to action on Wednesday, February 8, when they travel to Gallaudet University for another conference battle. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
