Newburgh, NY – Mike Hoyt wasted no time in today’s game to start breaking records. Only a minute and fifteen seconds into today’s match-up against St. Joseph’s College, the junior guard scored a lay-up to post the first points of the game. With this shot, Hoyt broke the All-Time Record for points scored in a single season at Mount Saint Mary College. As the memorable first half rolled on, Hoyt’s shots keep falling and more records kept breaking. At 4:02 a foul by St. Joseph’s Brian Fenton sent Mike to the charity stripe. After the swish of the first free throw Hoyt entered the 1500 point club. Less than a minute later, with 3:18 remaining in the half, Hoyt netted a deep three from the right wing off a feed from senior J.D. Fogarty to make him Mount Saint Mary College Men’s All-Time Leading Scorer. The 5-10 guard finished the night with 28 points while shooting 58% from the field compiling a total of 1519 points. Mike also had six assists, four steals, one block, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Blue Knights over St. Joseph’s College 91-82. Brendan Twomey, a 2004 graduate, previously held both school records with 562 points in a season and 1503 career points.
After watching his former teammate break two of his biggest career records, Brendan Twomey could only rave about Mike Hoyt. “I’ve been following Division III basketball for ten years, played in it for four, and I think Hoyt is one of the best Division III players I’ve ever seen,” said Twomey. “Mike was a freshman on the team when I was a senior and we established a great friendship. I would not have wanted anyone else to break my record. Hoyt is a great player and he deserves all of the recognition.”
Hoyt’s recognitions so far this year have been infinite. Hoyt has stayed atop the list of the NCAA Division III statistics ranking for the past month. He is currently ranked fourth in the country in points per game with 27.7 points. He is number five in three point field goals per game with 4.4 and 22nd in the nation for three-point field goal percentage with 44.6%. In assists per game Hoyt’s 6.1 assists puts him at number 14 and is 40th in the nation in steals with 2.5 steals. The ECAC and D3hoops.com have honored Hoyt on their Team of the Week twice this season. He was also named Skyline Conference Player of the Week four times. Currently, Hoyt is number one in the conference in scoring, three point field goals made, and assists. He has clearly paved the way to becoming the Skyline Conference Player of the Year.
With all of these accomplishments in tow, Hoyt remains focused on the present season. “Achieving this milestone in my career feels great and was important to me but the big win we finished with tonight was even more important,” quotes Hoyt.
The 91-82 victory for Mount Saint Mary College snapped a two game losing streak they have been on since last Saturday’s match-up against Farmingdale State University. The Blue Knights have now bettered their record to 18-4, 9-3 in the Skyline Conference. The Mount Saint Mary College seniors played big today including the guard duo of Brandon Weldon and Julio Ramirez. Ramirez had 23 points and Weldon had 21 points and three assists. The senior forwards chipped in as well with J.D Fogarty scoring seven points and Kieran Begley finishing with five points.
