McMurry 106, Schreiner 96

ABILENE, Texas — McMurry guaranteed its 14th-straight winning season when it beat Schreiner Saturday afternoon 106-96 at Kimbrell Arena. The Indians used a balanced scoring attack and a .542 shooting percentage to push past the Mountaineers for its 14th win of the season and 13th in the American Southwest Conference.

Rommel Colina led the Indians in scoring with 22 points and three others had double figures for McMurry. Every Indian scored in the contest and Dustin Faught had 13 points, Alvin Stevens pitched in 11 and Elijah Bryant had 10 points and seven assists in the win.

McMurry shot 39 of 72 for the game, had eight three pointers and was 20 of 28 from the charity stripe in the win. The team capitalized off Schreiner’s 24 turnovers by scoring 43 points on the Mountaineers’ miscues.

The Indians led 45-32 at the half and held off a late-rally when Schreiner went on a 8-3 run to bring the score 88-80 with 5:47 remaining. McMurry countered with a 12-4 that helped keep the Mountaineers from getting back into the game.

Kevin Deans led Schreiner with 31 points and 10 rebounds; he was 13 of 19 from the floor and added three 3-pointers. The Mountaineers shot extremely well from beyond the arc, hitting 11 of 24 attempts. Jarrell Williams and Brandon Burke also scored in double digits for the visitors with 17 and 12 points respectively.

McMurry improved to 14-7 overall and 13-5 in the ASC while Schreiner’s struggles continue, falling to 3-16 overall and 3-14 in conference play.

With Howard Payne beating Mary Hardin Baylor Saturday, the Indians are in a more comfortable spot at second place in the ASC West Division. Mary Hardin-Baylor trails the leaders, Howard Payne, by four games while McMurry is 2.5 games back with four games left to play.

The Indians will get a chance to cut into Howard Payne’s first-place lead Thursday when they play host to the Yellow Jackets at 7:30 p.m. Then, Saturday McMurry will look for revenge against Sul Ross State at Kimbrell Arena. The Lobos’ Sidney Hooper hit a 3-point bucket at the buzzer last month in Schreiner to beat the Indians 107-106.
