NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — After their first game of the season was a little too close for comfort, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team made sure that there was some space at the end in their second game of the season against Little East Conference opponent Plymouth State at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday.

Junior guard Devon Maiorano’s three-point field goal with 11:18 remaining gave the Corsairs the lead for good,m and UMD built a 10-point lead and held off PSU for an 83=71 victory.

The teams had battled back and forth since they were tied at halftime at 36-all before Maiorano’s three-pointer untied it for good. Junior forward Julian Tynes added a trey, sophomore guard A.J. Tavares hit two more, and then the Corsairs made 10 consecutive free throws to take a 69-59 lead with 4:32 remaining. The Panthers never got closer than six points after that.

“We started off well in the first half, but we allowed them too many second shots,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “We did a much better job in the second half, plus Devon and A.J. hit some big threes. (Freshman guard) Daryl did a great job for us at the point, and we mad eour free throws down the stretch.”

Tavares led a balanced Corsair scoring attack with 17 points. Maiorano and junior forward Stephane Abelard had 14 apiece, junior center Dan Holbrook added 13, and junior forward Paul Pawlowski contributed 12. Pawlowski and Holbrook each had eight rebounds, as did PSU’s Devin Ruocco as the Oanthers outrebounded UMass Dartmouth, 34-31.

Mark Dunham led Plymouth State with 14 points, Kevin Boutilier added 13, and Brandon Boggs had 10.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 12-9 and 5-5 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Plymouth State fell to 13-8 and 5-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit UMass Boston in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening.
