Hamline 77, Macalester 72

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Jon DeRock had 24 points on a 10-for-14 shooting effort to lead Hamline past host-Macalester 77-72 Saturday afternoon. The Pipers improve to 8-12 overall and 7-8 in the MIAC, while Macalester had its three-game winning streak snapped and drops to 7-14 on the season, 6-10 in the conference. Hamline stays alive in its hopes for a spot in the six-team MIAC post-season playoffs while Saturday’s defeat hurts Macalester’s chances dramatically.

Each team shot 50 percent from the floor. The difference was a 15-5 Hamline advantage from the free throw line. The number of fouls called was about equal, but most of Macalester’s fouls were on Piper shots. Neither team shot well from three-point range (Hamline was 4-for-16 and Mac was 7-for-24).

DeRock was joined in double figures by Joe Smock with 15 points and Charley Good with 12. Kyle Foster grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with five assists, while Sam Wiener handed out six assists.

Tom Conboy pumped in 22 points on a 9-for-12 shooting day to pace Macalester. He was joined in double figures by Nate Assel with 11 points (to go along with six assists), and Jesse Hollander and Brendan Bosman with 10 points apiece.

The contest was close throughout and was tied on 11 occasions. The last tie was at 66-66 with 3:28 to go before Hamline went on a game-clinching 11-4 run to go up 77-70 with just :18 to play. Weiner had five points and Smock had four during this decisive rally.

Hamline plays Monday (Feb. 6) at home against Augsburg, while the Scots travel to Northfield Monday to take on second-place Carleton.
